Why Not Just Borrow From a Lending App Instead?
Instant personal loan apps exist because banks are slow and often won't lend small amounts to people without a credit history. That's a real problem they solve. But speed is close to the only thing they optimize for, and it comes at a cost that's easy to underweight when you need money by tomorrow.
| Instant loan app | Borrowing within your circle | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Minutes to hours | Depends on the person, often just as fast for small amounts |
| Interest rate | Often high — priced for the risk of lending to a stranger with limited credit history | Whatever you and the lender agree, often zero or low between people who trust each other |
| If you're late | Automated reminders, fees, and in some cases aggressive collections practices that have drawn regulatory scrutiny in India | A conversation with someone who knows your situation |
| Data access | Often requests broad phone/contacts permissions as part of underwriting | None beyond what you'd normally share with someone you know |
| Who decides the terms | The app, algorithmically | You and the other person |
None of this means instant loan apps are bad — for a genuine stranger-to-stranger transaction, algorithmic pricing for risk is a reasonable trade. It just means "fast" and "cheap" and "treated well if things go sideways" aren't all solved by the same product, and most apps are optimizing for the first one.
The actual gap
The people most of us would genuinely rather borrow from — a friend, a sibling, a close colleague — are often willing, but there's friction in actually asking: it can feel awkward, there's no clean way to agree terms without it being uncomfortable, and it's easy for who-owes-what to get fuzzy over time. Circle of Trust exists to remove that specific friction, not to replace the underwriting an app does for genuine strangers.
